Understanding Ratios

What Is a Ratio?

A ratio compares two or more quantities, showing their relative sizes.

  • Written as a:b or a/b
  • Shows "for every a, there are b"
  • Order matters: 2:3 ≠ 3:2
Simplifying Ratios

Find the simplest form by dividing both parts by their GCD.

  • 12:18 → GCD is 6
  • 12÷6 : 18÷6 = 2:3
  • Simplest form has no common factors
