Why the digits look like that: Iñupiaq counts in twenties with a rest-stop at five — the words for 6 through 9 are built as "five and one," "five and two," and so on. The students designed digits whose shape is the word: say "akimiaq malŗuk" (fifteen-and-two, 17) and you can hear the glyph — three five-strokes, two one-strokes. Zero through nineteen. Watch the pattern: the bottom zigzag gains a stroke per unit and resets at each five, when the top gains a wide stroke — a tally system folded into single glyphs, which is why you never have to count strokes to read one.

The subitizing trick, again: no group of strokes ever exceeds four — five ones become one five-stroke, four fives become the next place. Humans instantly see quantities up to about four without counting, and the Kaktovik students hit on the same design insight as the Maya (dots and bars), Roman subtractive clusters, and the five-bead of our Interactive Abacus — independently, in a school library, in 1994.

How long is a million?

Digits needed to write 1,000,000 by base. Base 20's twenty symbols buy noticeably shorter numbers than decimal — the same memorize-versus-length bargain every system strikes, priced in full on our numeral systems guide.

Bases are anatomy: ten is two hands, twenty is hands plus feet, and the five-stop inside Kaktovik digits is one hand finishing before the next begins. Iñupiaq shares this architecture with Yup'ik and other Inuit-Yupik languages, with Maya on the far side of the hemisphere, and with the sub-base-5 tallies of nearly every culture — a case our quinary converter and tally marks tool make from other directions. Years before the present — from a classroom exercise to a permanent block of the world's character standard in twenty-eight years, and the oldest bar for scale: the Maya running the same architecture two millennia earlier.

A note on sources: the origin account comes from the teacher who was in the room, William Clark Bartley, whose articles describe the students' design process and report that middle-school math scores in Kaktovik rose dramatically after bead-and-glyph arithmetic took hold — a reported outcome from a tiny cohort, worth exactly that weight. The Unicode history is public record (Unicode 15.0, September 2022, block U+1D2C0–U+1D2D3), and the system's wider fame owes much to a 2023 Scientific American feature.

The resemblance that matters most: Maya scribes two thousand years ago and Iñupiaq teenagers in 1994 faced the same language family of twenties-with-five-stops and converged on the same answer — small strokes for ones, a bundling mark at five, position for powers of twenty. Two independent inventions of the same idea, twenty centuries apart, is about the strongest evidence there is that number systems grow out of how people already count.
